Every designers’ dirty little secret is that they copy other designers’ work. They see work they like, and they imitate it. Rather cheekily, they call this inspiration. – Aaron Russell
Ever get one of those days when you are just searching your grey matter for some inspiration, something, anything… and what comes up? Nothing! Nada, zip, zilch. It’s so frustrating. I guess it’s the designers equivalent to writers block. I have worked as a graphic designer now for over 13 years!!! Scary stuff… For many years I worked in the eLearning industry (basically converting dry off the page training into interactive training). In the early days when computer based ‘anything’ was considered cutting edge, it was an exciting industry to work in as it was all new and fresh. However time moved on, the web grew ginormous, technology and design moved on and new methods and software meant design could push boundaries further… eLearning just wasn’t ‘sexy’ design and I grew somewhat disillusioned. My creative inspiration needed a kick up the arse!
Thankfully the world did me a favour and made me redundant from eLearning, a blessing in disguise as it gave me the push I needed to try new things and also to realise that I am a very capable designer and my skills were transferable. So I moved onto another industry, the big wide world of brand marketing! Its been a breath of fresh air designing for consumer and brand marketing, web, print and digital campaigns… I’ve even managed a little bit of eLearning with a brand twist and its reawakened my creative juices even in that sector!
However as I am getting older, I am finding the old grey cells are not as sharp as they used to be… Lets just say I keep Post-its in business. I see things I like and then I forget where I’ve seen them, like losing your keys or searching for your glasses when they are on top of your head. In order to help my ageing brain find its marbles, I wanted a central scrapbook, somewhere to post all my little findings out there in the big WWW. Imagery, type, something I have read, photography, art, something I have watched or something I have discovered. This blog is my mood-board to stay inspired and curious about what’s around me… I welcome comments and discussion and if you see something you like, give me a thumbs up and say hi!

Ah Sharon me dear, information architecture can be sexy design.
Annual reports for one instance, in my mind are the king of design jobs.
I know these aren’t your field at all, but check out how people have conveyed information to be seductive.

Nearly forgot the king of them all, Harry Beck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Beck), and his timeless piece, the underground map http://diagrams.org/images/png/medium/f00022.png
Cheers for these Mitch… Will have a look through…
Harry Beck. I did a project on him at Bucks College about the branding of London Transport. Good fun doing screen prints of iconic LT images, including the underground map.
🙂
